2009 October 8
by Anne Brown

A Press Release will be published in the Bristol Evening Post linked to the event below on Thursday 8th October 2009:

Following the most successful GCSE results in the history of The Grange School and Sports College, Warmley, Bristol, opened its doors to host a class of 24 students for 8 days who travelled from Weiz, Austria to study at the school. The Austrian students were hosted by Grange students ranging in age from 11-17 and they took part in lessons, sports activities and cultural experiences throughout their visit. The group of Austrian students and their teachers arrived on Tuesday 29th September 2009.

The Grange School and Sports College has recently been re-accredited for the International Schools Award which is in recognition of the International work carried out by the staff and students within the curriculum and through extended school activities. The International Co-ordinator Mr James Dale will attend a prestigious award ceremony in London next month to receive the award on behalf of the school.

Last week the school hosted two teachers from Leikanger Norway who are planning a Maths, Science and IT project to begin next term. At the end of October teachers from Spain, Norway and The Netherlands will spend four days at the school developing a Business Enterprise Project.

The school is looking forward to developing its extensive links with 12 countries through the use of new technologies in the recently completed International Business Enterprise Centre (IBEC). On Monday 12th October the school will welcome a 50 piece orchestra from Kuopio, Finland, to play a concert at 15:00 at the school. For details of the concert please contact Mr Ben England at the school on 01454 862800

The Headteacher, Mr. Steve Cook said “the school is immensely proud of its achievements and the opportunities created for our students through international links brings a completely different dimension to their education. We look forward this year to a series of projects linked to the new IBEC facility which will not only include our students and staff but also opportunities for parents/carers and community groups.”

The Creative Arts Faculty has teamed up with Bath Spa Training Teachers and the Iroko Theatre Company (Traditional African Theatre Music and Dance) to work with Year 9 students on Wednesday 7th October. Iroko is a highly successful company and are well supported by organisations such as The Guardian, the Arts Council, Heritage Lottery funding and the Foundation for Sports and the Arts. The students will watch a performance and then take part in workshops based on the theme ‘Pattern and Rhythm’. These students studied an innovative cross curricular project on Africa in Year 7.

See ‘Opening of IBEC and the IROKO event’ for more information and photographs.
